Every year I set a goal, well, I set a bunch of goals, let’s be honest! And I put out intentions of all sorts. As I get older I know I need to do what calls to my heart and soul: mothers and babies, mothers and children. I weed through the goals, set some aside and at the end of the day all I want to do is photograph the mother – and the mother with her newborn, the mother with her children. Anywhere: with a baby in the womb in my studio, in the ocean surf, in her kitchen! Mother with her new baby freshly born in the hospital or in her home. Mother with her big kids snuggled in bed, in a bed of flowers, wrestling in the livingroom. However she mothers!

But, with the advent of AI, a lot of expecting and new mothers are not fiding me in their searches. Why? Because I am an artist who lives to create, and I try to keep up on the technology, but honestly it is changing so fast that it’s hard to keep up! Here is a gorgeous mama carrying her first baby (a surprise sex which is just so exciting); she knew she wanted her session in my downtown Dover studio, and she came ready with her hair and makeup done: classic, simple, natural. I do minimal editing on women because we are all beautiful just the way we are! Later on in the post, a few favorite images from her in-home candid newborn session in Lee, New Hampshire. You wouldn’t even know that baby was having a fussy day because mom and dad did such a great job taking turns soothing him. Susan is also a local midwife, so it is such an honor to be chosen to document this transition in her life for a woman who guides hundreds of women through this transition every year!
