August in New England does not scream ski season, so Loon Mountain might seem like an unlikely place to host a wedding, but for mountain lovers like Alissa and Ryan, the beauty of the White Mountains knows no season. Alissa and Ryan first fell in love with the area, and each other, while studying at Plymouth State University. And while they have since created an urban lifestyle together in Boston, the mountains hold a dear place in their hearts. So much so, that when Ryan decided to propose to Alissa, he did it back at their alma mater!
I grew up close to Loon Mountain in nearby Holderness, NH, so it always feels like a homecoming when I am asked to shoot a wedding here – it fills my heart! Quirky details like the gondola and old school ski resort decor make for unique photo opportunities while the epic mountain vistas, which can only be matched by the beaming smiles of gorgeous couples like Alissa and Ryan, are showstoppers no matter the season!
We decided to do their first look with the banks of the river as the backdrop. It was touching to witness a couple who met in college, and have been together for four years, look at each other as if it were the first time. Alissa surprised Ryan with a gold cross to wear for the special day. I asked her later what was the story behind this gift and she wrote, “I wanted him to have something he would wear all the time, something meaningful. Like most guys, Ryan wore no jewelry so I thought the cross would allow him to carry his faith with him wherever he goes, remind him of our bond, our promise to one another, and God.” So sweet… and then it was time to summit for a few more portraits and the long-awaited ceremony!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of shooting and attending weddings, couples who met in college have the wildest dance parties. Alissa and Ryan’s friends and family did not disappoint, bringing down the house like the good old days. The beautiful day, the cheerful attendees, and this epic location could not have been a more perfect representation of the joyous love these two clearly have for each other. True to form, the newlyweds are currently off on their next mountain adventure in Spain and Portugal touring Plaza de Toros and hiking Caminito Del Rey!
ENJOY!
